Different Programs have Different Duties.
Now with Spyware in my opinion there are 2 extremely good programs. One of which is Spybot and other is Windows Defender. The good thing about these 2 programs is they will not cancel each other out. But in reality they will work for a common purpose of removing Spyware. What one program may miss the other one will catch.
For Virus Protection programs I recommend Avast or AVG. Running Spybot and Defender, with EITHER Avast or Avg (great Free virus protection programs ) will keep a computer in good working condition.
In addition I am now seeing a huge reference CCleaner and this is a fantastic cleaning tool to use. You should use that everyday single day as well.
Links Below are Programs that WILL Help.
I have Both AVG and Spybot on my computer.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.519

Spybot – Search & Destroy 1.5.2

Ccleaner

McAfee is excellent, and it is 100% free for a year! AVG Internet Security is also really good. x
Avira or Avast are hands down the best of the freeware programs. Both have very high detection and removal rates:
1) Freware – Avira:

2) Freeware – Avast:
