I have Norton Anti-virus and I update it regularly. However whenever I perform a full system scan, it never finds anything other than a cookie or two, so I don’t see the point. I regularly delete all my browsers’ caches, files, cookies, etc, so I don’t see the need for the virus protection other than needing something to automatically start and slow my computer down when I don’t want it to.
Question I guess is, do I actually need the virus protection?

yes it is, i have the protector thing but it didn’t do anything cuzz i still have the virus 🙁
Think of it this way. Go online without your antivirus software on your computer and you will get infected right off the bat. Even if you are surfing generaly safe sites.
I have repaired quite a few computers stricken with viruses. And believe me you want a virus scanner, but perhaps try one lighter on the computers recourses like Avast free edition. Norton is know to be a ram hog and does slow you down.
If your anti virus program doesn’t find anything when you do the scans, that’s a good thing. That means IT’S DOING IT’S JOB.
Yes windows OS needs an antivirus protection no matter how annoying it maybe. If you want a fast scanning, high detection and removal and light on resorces then I would recommend kaspersky antivirus. Norton is too bloated and hogs your pc especially if your short on RAM and has been one of the antivirus that is on a downhill.
Depends on the kind of websites you visit
why dont you bet all your files on it and take it off and see what happens.
I usually keep mine turned off (since it slows everything down when it’s running). I scan about once a month. Never had a single virus.
You need some sort of protection. Now, whether that protection is group policies and file permissions, or a full blown resident software application is up to you.
I prefer the first, given that proper configuration is far more effective and reliable, however, it takes quite a bit of skill and effort. It is much simpler to install an antivirus.
There is one thing worth mentioning. Antiviruses do not actually "prevent" malware. They simply remove it after it infects or reaches your machine. Only configuration and system policies will actually prevent it.
Norton is a poor choice of antivirus. You are better off with Nod32, if you are willing to pay, or Avast, if you want a free solution.
