i have never heard of a virus so sophisticated that it can shut down your software, but if you still want to check just go into your start menu and type windows task manager, open it and then click on processes. look down the list until you find your virus software. if you dont see it its probably just off.
i honestly wouldn’t worry about something like that if you have avg and you firewall set to medium.
Yes some viruses can disable your virus protection. There really is no specific way to check your protection. It usually will tell you whether or not you are protected on the main page of the virus program. If you use a pay anti-virus then you may want to get a free anti virus just as extra protection, what one anti virus doesn’t pick on, another will. Generally I have at least 2 but upwards of 4 on my computer. Free programs that I use are: Malware Bytes anti-malware, SUPERAntiSpyware, Spy Bot S & D. Pay Programs: Norton, McAfee, MalwareBytes’ Anti-Malware (there are 2 version, free and pay version). MalwareBytes’ is good when used for program that automatically install themselves, all the free and pay are good for registry changes, and McAfee is good for most things, but as with all of the programs there are viruses that they won’t get but others will, which is why it is best to have multiple anti-viruses.
