Show him and let him know all that you know and also be truthful about what you don’t know. If you can show yourself as enthusiastic and a quick learner and someone who can take decisions and think on their feet, that will go a long way. I have seen it work for my friend, who took an opportunity to do computer repair for corporates and was in a somewhat similar situation before he got a chance at the firm below.
To impress him/her set up a printer or storage device on the network. Setting up a computer to the internet is easy, a printer or a storage device isn’t. Not for the normal everyday person anyways. Also try setting up two computer through homegroup or similar.
How to built networks within networks?
How to debug intranet / intranet based emails?
How to make server less vulnerable from malware attacks?
How to limit bandwidth usage for users?
If some of these questions you know, maybe you have the guts!
Since it’s a Repair Shop …then show him that you can connect two computers with a router (maybe) …and transfer data …mirror it or back up data on the other computers hard drive etc. …basically access data to and fro
I took an entire class on networking this semester. It’s a lot more than setting up a home router- that’s usually very easy. Do you know how to access a home router from a computer?
I suggest you learn up on the commands ipconfig and ping very quickly. The first will get you the default gateway- usually the best way to access a home router. Also be sure that you know how to access the networking center from XP, Vista, and Windows 7.
If he asks you for more complex skills, tell him the truth, though. You’re definitely not familiar with the tools of a network technician, and you’re probably not going to effectively use any Linux distribution anytime soon. You’re more interested in computer repair and basic tech support.
If he still wants you, it’s likely that you really need to learn everything you possibly can about home routers. Read up on opening ports, changing channels, and just about anything you can read in the html interface of your own home router if you have one. Look up some good freeware tools related to networking. InSSIDer is a good wireless tool. You might also do well to grab yourself a wireless adapter and/or an ethernet cord to test the connection on your laptop or other device.
Good luck.
