first, you should know that Vista better than XP…
also u have to know this way to make your laptop or computer faster, this way is to go to run and write " msconfig " then go to start up from the bar above and tick those programs which are not in the system like updating for realplayer and microsoft office,,,
then restart your computer and it will be very fast…
I advice you to use Kaspersky… very good in anti-virus…
stay on Vista and any question write to me…
Switching to Windows XP would make your pc run a lot faster as Vista is a resource hog and runs the computer into the ground. The best Antivirus would be AVG and the best Anti Spyware would be Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware(install them both but use one at a time) System Mechanic is very good to use for defraging. As for a firewall, i always use an external firewall so im not sure what to tell you for that. Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

Freeware first:
firewall:
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall)
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that’s very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don’t get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com)
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware:
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com)
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org) for additional removal ability.
For performance tuning, Advanced WindowsCare Personal is a fairly new but highly recommended free program that incorporates several features:

For defrag, this is one of the best free tools available:

Using these tools and running Disk Cleanup regularly will keep your system well tuned.
XP would be slightly faster with 2GB of RAM than Vista, but you’d want to make sure your laptop can run XP first before trying to switch – many new laptops do not have XP driver support.
