I highly recommend the free version of AVG antivirus/antispyware. It is very complete & you get regular updates of the virus/spyware definitions. http://free.avg.com
zone-alarm is a really good firewall
Spybot Search & Destroy is a very good (free) spy/mallware checker
well i had same issues but had ca anti virus and adaware se plus and 5 trojans viruses shut off my protection still they could not help after re enableing so i did research found spyware doctor and registry mechanic it took some doing to load because of viruses but after many attempts i was able to run it and now my laptop is better than it was when i had 3 programs [i would use one and delete it so not to slow it up too much] still have adaware se plus it takes out some the pc tools doesn’t but boot tiome is really fast now it worked for me .
look up avg or avast for free antivirus and spy bot search and destroy for spyware. and ccleaner tunes up your pc by deleting uneccessary files in recycle bin and in the registry like recently uninstalled programs. and for firewall windows already has one just turn it on in control panel..,these programs are all free so save your money for something else.
Good security can be had for free, its just not in a neat all-in-one "security suite"
For good computer security on a Windows computer, and to prevent virus and other malware you need to do a minimum of 4 things.
1. Run a firewall.
2. Use a good anti-virus with real-time protection.
3. Do a regular scan with a dedicated anti-spyware,
4. Keep Windows and all your other installed software, 100% updated and patched with all important and security updates.

My recommendations:
1. For the typical home user of XP, Windows (built-in) Firewall is adequate, even more so if one is using a router, which is a very good firewall in itself. Make sure your Windows Firewall is turned "on".
2. For your Anti-Virus……I would suggest Avast, the newest version 4.8. Avast now includes anti-virus, some anti-spyware capability and anti-rootkit components. And all for the low low price of free. You can get it here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
(Always use only 1 A-V…You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict…did I mention that you MUST uninstall old Norton?)
3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs…
SUPERAntiSpyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
Scan with SUPER on a regular basis.
They have a free version.
4. Use Secunia PSI to insure that all your software is kept always updated and patched against vulnerabilities that are often exploited to compromise computers. Very important, unfortunately often overlooked by the user, but not the black-hats that code the malware! They know exactly where the weak points are.
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
Its free as is everything else here.
Reinstall the operating system. Save files on a diff drive. I’ve never had a virus controller program on my computer and never will 97% of the free stuff is either you can use it for a bit then you have to pay or a virus.
go to http://www.freedownload.com and search for antivirus, and find a highly rated program. i would still recommend getting a subscription softwae when you can afford it.
Avast! Home Edition is a very good free AV – It offers anti-rootkit; whereas AVG doesn’t.

Online Armor Free firewall is very good – and is fairly easy to use. It repeatedly scores very well on the matousec.com firewall challenge.

Two additional ‘shields’:
ThreatFire – http://www.threatfire.com/
SpywareBlaster – http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware *and* SUPERAntiSpyware are both very good for back-up. Run scans periodically to ensure nothing has slipped past your AV. It is a good idea to install both – the free versions offer no real-time protection so they won’t conflict with each other and will only use system resources when you are scanning.
MBAM – http://www.malwarebytes.org/
SAS – http://www.superantispyware.com/
Use CCleaner to clean out all you temp folders and browser history.

There are some very good add-ons available for Firefox – the NoScript add-on is very good protection against malicious scripts and the Web of Trust add-on will alert you to known malicious sites.
NoScript – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
WOT – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3456
Adblock Plus – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
Secunia PSI (that tempo1 mentioned) is also a very good addition to keeping your PC protected.
