Also download and run updated scans with spybot and Adaware.
Run a defrag – make sure you have atleast 15% free space at all times. Not only does it take lesser time, it also keeps the drives free from stress and increases stability and life. (though there are some third party tools that defrag with much lesser free space- google for trial versions). For this you can uninstall programs that you dont need, burn music, movies pics etc onto DVDs ets, then run a diskcleanup(get rid of temp files, recycle bin files, older restore points) and you should be able to get some space free.

Good luck!
Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

You can download and scan your computer for free.
not enough RAM
Try to delete some programs you won’t need for your computer, but be careful not to download crucial programs that help your computer function properly. Not enough memory causes your computer to slow down since it has no where else to put it’s memory, it just throws it into other files which then hog your computer’s space and performance.
It might also be that you computer is running slow is because there is a virus trying to gain access to your computer. Think of it this way, there is a fire surrounding you wherever you go and there are all these exploits trying to kill you, the firewall does it’s job by repelling them back, but of course the firewall can’t take too much exploits, so it asks it’s parent program (your anti-virus program) for more support (memory).
Hope this helps
Search this on Google, you’ll get lots of things to do to make it faster.
I would try the following (in the order listed):
1) Check your hard drive to make sure that there is enough free space. Usually, you will need a good 4-5 GBs of free space. If you cant get that much space after running disk cleanup, you may need to upgrade your hard drive.
2) Use an anti-virus and anti-spyware application to make sure that you don’t have any bugs on your PC slowing things down. I have found that the best free ones are AVAST (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html).
3) Clean and defrag your registry by running a good registry cleaner (e.g. Registry Booster). Over periods of time, the registry accumulates lots of clutter than can slow down a computer. I have heard that SpeedUpMyPC works well, but I haven’t tried it.
3) Increase the amount of RAM. XP runs best with no less than 1GB and VISTA with no less than 2GB. If you’re running Win 98, it’s probably time to get a new PC.
4) Reinstall Windows. Sometimes there is no substitute for a clean install of Windows. Just make sure that you have copies of your installed applications and back up your data on a portable drive. CD’s and DVD’s aren’t always the most reliable.
Good luck.
