The Windows Registry is the master control center for your operating system and applications it runs. Corruption or overload registry issues can cause all sorts of pc performance problems, including poor application startup times, slow Windows start-up, extremely slow shut down, slow internet surfing, inability to resume from computer sleep and more.Cleaning, compacting, and optimizing your Windows registry can go a long way to dramatically speeding up your computer’s performance, start-up and shutdown speed.
Recommended: Run a Registry Scan http://make-computer-run-smoothly.com Now to Detect Errors and Improve your PC’s speed instantly!
1. Backup ALL your important files: Documents, pictures, term papers, etc.
2. Blow dust out of fans and heat sinks. Common problem!
3. Check your memory. Recommended minimum is 1 Gig
4. Un-install Unused Programs via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
5. Run Disk Cleanup

I assume your pc was performing better earlier for the same applications that you are trying to use now.
Check to see what processes are running. Right click on windows taskbar and click Task Manager. I use shortcut key: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Go to the Processes Tab. You will see the Executables currently running on your computer. The ones you may be interested in are those consuming most memory and / or taking most CPU cycles. Click on "Mem Usage" column header to sort by that column. See which one is consuming the most memory and whether that is something recent. Similarly you can sort by CPU also and see for a while which process is taking the most resource.
If you do not have any of the above mentioned columns (Mem Usage or CPU), you can add to the list by going to the menu "View" –> Select Columns.
Hope that helps identify the problem.
Something similar happened to me and I discovered using this method that I Oracle database is running which I had installed some days back in my PC and now it gets loaded whenever I boot my PC. That makes it awfully slower. I stopped the automatic loading of Oracle and I got back to normal speed.
If problems persist later on in the day or even tomorrow email me, becuase I have to go right now.

if you have a pc then do the following.
click "start"
go to "run"
when the "run" window opens up, type in "%temp%"
this will bring you to a large list of temporary files that are added to your computer over time through websites and client etc. they include adware and stuff.
now delete ALL of the files. do them indivisually, if you think all of them are bad then do this.
CONTROL + "A" and then just click shift- delete.
this deletes everything there. if not then run a virus scan and delete any other crap on your computer. hope this helps.
