Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html
having been a computer user now for more years than I can remember the days when a computer was a 64k keyboard coupled to a portable tv so we are talking old time user lol
My advice to you is either reinstall windows if you have the install disk, if not do what I have done, move off Microsoft, Vesta is not going to be any better than XP is today when it comes out,
If you have broadband internet then go to http://www.novell.com and download the live DVD of Suse Linux 10.1 you will need a DVD burner, this is what you can do with this DVD
Learn how to use Suse Linux (It leaves MS Windoz standing)
you can boot from the DVD use all the programs on the dvd just like you could if they where installed on your computer, you can also get onto the internet if you have broadband
You can also download the proper version for free which is 5 cd’s or you can download the DVD version, here is the thing with Suse Linux it is just like windows point and click. you get all the updates free and the support is second to none.
you get every software package you will ever need, a Office program that is compatable with microsoft office,, cd/dvd burning, Music, video, photo editing, mpeg software that will connect ipods players to download your music to, you name it it’s there all for free.
I have talked my grand kids into using Suse Linux and they love it
the best part about using the dvd is you can learn it without installing it onto your computer,
you will need 256 meg of ram in your computer
a DVD burner/reader
"That ‘slowness’ is actually a FEATURE that reminds you it is time to re-install the Operating System" was the drill about 2002, from Microsoft.
Just last week, Steve Ballmer was saying how fast Vista was going to run, now that they have 20 Gigabytes of code in it, and the mandatory 2Gigabytes of RAM runnng!
So, what we have here, with WinXP, is a "has been", but, so is IIS, and all the other code. Microsoft runs ONLY Linux, on their 45,000 systems at Redmond, on the Lab 400, Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, and MSN.com, and all corporate firewalls, and routers, and corporate systems…
The free advice is that you go here http://pclinuxos.com and grab a free ISO to burn to CDrom, and then, you re-boot.
Then, you will be smart, just like Microsoft!
Try this first before the destructive restore.
You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.
You may need to reinstall any recent software programs, but it is a quick fix when you dont know what else to do.

ok… man, first of all, clean your registry with pc tools registry mechanic found on http://www.download.com website, next fragment it again this time use diskeeper 11 also found on download.com and then wait until it finishes it’s defrag, if it’s still slow, then you have to uninstall the games with large files, the ones with 1, 2, or 3gb of disk space because they can really slow your computer, next uninstall all the uneeded softwares like multimedia (then reinstall it again after a while) one by one only leave those who are originally in your windows when you’ve installed it the first time.. next is scan the registry using registry mechanic youve downloaded and then defrag it gain using diskeeper.. everything now should work fine… and oops.. also download the spyware doctor and i hope you have an antivirus the avg free is the best.. also download it from download.com (after the scan is finished, uninstall the two software avg free and spyware doctor) reboot your machine and then all should be in perfect condition… if ever avg or aspyware doctor detected any threath on your pc don’nt hesitate to clean delete or quarantine that file/s ok…u dont have to reinstall just follow these ..
in order to reinstall the operating system:
1. you need a windows xp install cd handy
2. back up all your important files AND drivers.
3. pop in and boot from the windows cd
4. when asked if you want to reformat the hard drive, say yes, delete the partition, and reformat it.
5. just continue with the installation
hope that helps.
first of all; delete "only what you dont need", if there is still too much, burn them to disk, and finally, go to microsoft site below,
http://safety.live.com
Most people don’t have the Windows disc. Do you?
If you still have you original restore disk or disks, turn your computer off then insert first disk then follow instructions
yeah, all our advice is free. The first thing, go to my computer, and find a drive. Pick one, double click on it, and it should say like drive c: or something. when you click on it, you see MANY folders, go into each one tthat includes something like my documents or games, whatever you nmed your folders. Right click on that object, and click on the bar DELETE. IT should ask you if you want to and respond yes. Try to do these in full folders, it’ll take less time. I also beleive you cannot delete your windoes XP unless you’re installing a new program to run the computer like linux. Try NOT to use systems or software to clean it out, i may delete something you dont want to, like important documents. But, you may take the risk. HOPE I HELPED!!!
No just clean it up..
Download, update and run Spybot—http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don’t forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware—http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download SpywareBlaster—http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn’t scan and clean for spyware – it prevents it from ever being installed.
It’s main features include:
– Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
– Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
– Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download RegScrubXP–http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it’s original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
