Hello-
I have a Dell Inspiron Notebook 8200 series that is about 4-5 years old.
When I put a disc, any disc, into the dvd rom drive it will spin the disc around for about 30-45 seconds and make noise like it wants to start reading it but then it just stops and does nothing and does not read it.
When I go into ‘My Computer’ and right-click on the drive it recogonizes it and says it is working properly. Also on the self diagnostics it says it is working properly too. It just will not read a disc though, of any format.
I start school next week and really need my dvd rom drive to install some new software…can anyone think what the problem may be?
Thanks so much!

You can try getting a CD/DVD lens cleaner and see if that fixes the problem. You can get them at Radio Shack or most Big Box electronics stores and many music/video stores. If that fails then you need to replace the drive. Fastest and easiest solution is get an external USB CD-ROM drive and install your software with the external drive. Replacing the CD-ROM drive is no biggie on your system. Just move the slider on the base below the drive and pull the whole thing out. You can get a replacement on eBay for around $100.
If you have tried the same disc in 2 diferent computers just to be sure the disk is ok?
If not try it, otherwise the your drive lens/laseris bad windows will still see it as good because it powers up and runs it just can read the disk it’s like you put a bad disk in the drive.
Repair can be and option but for the time and money if you don’t know how to do it just be new one they are very cheap now.
The lens is bad. has to be replaced with a fresh lens. If there is warranty it is 1 hour job. go to the service provider.
Try Active-X Diagnostic tool.
Start—All Programs–Accessories–System Tools–System Information–Tools—Direct X Diagnostic Tool.
Lot’s of cool stuff to mess around with there.
If that don’t help, contact the manufacturer to see if there are any forums related to your issue.
