   Did you choose to launch Startup Repair? Did that fix the problem?

   Did you try to load the system into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 after the Dell Logo appears, and then choosing Safe Mode? From Safe Mode, can you run your anti-virus and anti-malware programs to see if an infection is causing the issue?

   You may have an infection. You may be facing the initial stages of a failing hard drive, as hard drives typically last 3-5 years, and this is a laptop that it at least 3 years old. You may be facing a bad Windows update, as that laptop was shipped with Vista, and Vista was known for screwing up updates.

   You may have to take it to a repair shop and have them diagnose the issue.
