Here are some of my favorite free programs. Only use one virus removal program. Try ccleaner for sure. Clean the registry. Don’t forget to defrag weekly.

note: you should only use one anti-virus software.
If you have the original software that the manufacturer shipped with the laptop or a recovery partition you could easily back up any of her files on an external hard drive or flash drive then use the Operating System disk or recovery partition to restore the computer back to factory default (a process called reformatting that erases everything on a partition of your internal hard drive and installs the operating system with factory default settings).
I would be surprised if you don’t notice a substantial increase in speed after this process.
Check for malware and spyware. Defrag the hard drive. Defrag the registry. Check how much free space she has. Get a pc monitering software and check temps. Clean unnecessary files.
If you are currently using your sister’s laptop, you probably won’t get this answer til next week… So I am not going to bother answering it 🙂

what else you can do to speed up your computer:
1. stop those unnecessary start-up programs which will affect computer boot time a lot.
2. do a disk defragment or a registry defragment. the former will free up your disk space, and the latter will give a clean registry.
3. notice that just cleaning up registry is not enough. you should fix registry errors.Registry is so important to a computer, so if you are unfamiliar with it ,do not delete anything by yourself, or your computer will collapse.
4. remove all junk files and history.
5.do not use more than 1 antivirus software is harm to your computer. They will make a big confliction by uncompatible with each other.
6. Add some RAM, which is helpful to computer speed.
7. if all above do not work, you may consider to do a reinstall of Windows. Before you do it , please remember to back up all your important files.
