If you have two anti virus and spy ware programs running they will slow it down. Disable or remove one of each. If you have good ones you do not need two at once. Close any programs running in back ground on start up or go to task manager and close all programs you are not using. A phishing filter will slow a computer down, only use when visiting web sites you do not know or trust. Only use one fire wall.
Hope this helps
You can try any of the following:
1.) Saved all your important files/data and reformat and reload windows.
2.) You might have too many programs running in the background. Hogging resources. IE. 2 antivirus? Best is just one. Otherwise you might experience conflicts. Norton & Mcafee are resource hoggers btw.
3.) Dont let too many programs autostart when Windows starts. Just launch them when you need them.
4.) Try stronger anti-spyware progs like Spybot.

go to start, click run, type in MSCONFIG
at the top there are several tabs. go to start-up
disable everything in the list (uncheck them) click apply then ok. restart the system.
delet your temp internet files and your cookies
you should back up the files you need and then reinstall windows
thats what i do when my computer goes really slow
u just got your answer yourself. "running and latest patches to XP SP2" those patches Really slow more your PC.
try using CCleaner and autoruns.
