As a side not the only way to have a registry clean as new is to reload your OS but CCleaner and other programs will help a lot if you do not want or can’t do it.

You might try this site for a free scan–http://www.registrysmart.com.
I did the free scan first, and then bought the software (think it cost maybe $30 at most) back in Sept. 2007. It is a good program, and will find errors. On their home page, one testimonial from a guy in Wisconsin said it found 400 errors on his computer! It is designed for Windows 98/XP/ME/2000 and Vista.
