Depending on the maker of your hard drive, some manufacturers have disk utilities that you can download to help trouble shoot your problems. Some will perform a disk physical, check errors, and even allow you to change some settings. Below is a link for Seagate/Maxtor support for some downloads. You will have to burn them to a CD or a floppy and then boot to them and perform the tests.
THE BEST WAY TO WIPE OUT A HARD DRIVE IS TO FORMAT IT MINIMALLY 8 TIMES AND THEN INSTALL YOUR COMPUTER AS IT IS DESCRIBED ON THE WEBSITE BELOW

It depends on what make and model of hard drive you own. Check on your manufacturer’s website to see if they have diagnostic utilities.
use scan disk and defrag already installed on your computer.
click on my computer > move cursor over the drice you want and right click your mouse. click on properties.
you could really save yourself a lot of trouble if you would just read the help and support files in your windows start up menu. there is also troubleshooting info in there too for when your computer acts up
