I have an older model Apple iMac that I am trying to run some software updates on. I am connected to the internet (I am posting this from the computer I am asking about), however when I try to run the updates it tells me there was an error because there is no internet connection. I try to run a network Diagnostic on what the problem could be and it freezes and never goes through. Does anyone know why this could be happening and what I need to do to fix it?

Download the combo updater as a disk image, then run and install the update that way. Obviously you have some corrupted data in the MBR, or the database that keeps track of files on your Mac.
You can try to repair disk permissions to see if that will help the problem.
I would advise you to get a copy of diskwarrior, and keep it on hand as this fixes all problems with disk database issues, and problems with the MBR
