Some of these scanners (to fully get rid of infections) have to be ran in Safe Mode. To do that, before the Windows “Welcome Logo”, press F8 and in the menu that now appears, hit one of the “boot into safe mode” options.
ALSO you may have to download these products on other computer and then transfer them to the infected computer (via USB Flash Drive, External HDD, CD or DVD, LAN, …etc )

As far as what programs and what else to do .. I am sorry but Mike S. and Heebus already covered it, honestly … so just listen to their advice

Get Microsoft Security Essentials
then
goto download . com and get
Ccleaner and JKDefrag.
Download and scan with these 2 free utilities…to rule out infections first…….

After those are done…download and install this small utility to find out what you have at start up and disable those not needed like games, ……etc….

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ That’s all you need to know ^ ^ ^ ^ .
Edit:
I missed the part where you said you have Avast (just woke up).
Run a boot-time scan with Avast.
Here’s how:
Click on your orange Avast orb > Scan Computer > Boot Time Scan > Schedule Now > Restart.
Edit:
My ‘fan’ apparently just woke up too.. thanks for the thumbs.
