Long term storage – CD. The dye in a CD will last longer than the dye in a DVD. (We’re talking how many decades – if you mean a few years, either one is fine. Simulations seem to indicate that a well-made CD should last between 50 and 100 years, but a DVD might not last more than 25-50 years.)
Movies – DVD, since a standard length movie won’t fit on a CD, and many DVD players won’t play movies on a CD (you can put an avi file on a CD or use a different format to put a movie on a CD, but to play it on a DVD plauyer, use a DVD and standard [vob] format).
Slideshows, pictures, data – if it fits on a CD use a CD, if not use a DVD.
+R and -R are different ways the data sits on the disk. Since current drives can read and write either one, use whichever one you have.
DVD-DL disks are dual layer – they can hold twice as much data. You need a DL drive to write that much data to them. Any drive can read them.
R and RW. R disks can be written to once. Once you burn the disk, all you can do is read it. RW disks can be erased and written to again. And again.
I go through a few hundred disks a month, and so far I haven’t found any difference between cheap disks that come 100 in a shrink-wrap package (about $15/100 for CDs and $19/100 for DVDs) and name brand disks that cost 10 times as much. Just burn as slowly as the program will allow (4X is slow enough for any disk – no need to get ridiculously slow). Burning at high speed is the cause of most bad burning.
It really easy. First thing you need to know is that most people don’t ever need to know what the plus and minus means(it’s complex and truly doesn’t matter to a consumer. Either is good ). Just know that if your CD/DVD drive is plus, use a disk that is plus, and the same for minus. There are even disks that are plus/minus. Second thing you should know is that for everything, you should go with DVD RWs(+and- f you can find it.You’ll know it when you see it.) Go with them for the simple fact that they hold the most data and can be used more than once. Of course, there are many more opitions for Optical Media, but for a basic user, this is your best opition.
DVDs for large amounts of data
CDs for smaller amounts of data
Don’t worry about the + or – unless you need the disc to work in a drive that doesn’t support certain formats. These days most CD/DVD writers support pretty much every format.
For High Res Pics, use just a plain ole CD-R, you can get a ton on pictures on a CD and it would probably be the most compatible with whatever the client has.
For storing Medium-High pics, i would personally go with DVD RW, you can get a heck of a lot of pics on a DVD and the RW means you can add more or take some away when ya need to.
Slide-shows/Data probably CD’s Depending on how much. Movies, DVD Definitely. Unless you have a stripped down ripped off movie under 600mb, most movies won’t even fit on a CD.
dvd+r is ure best bet
