the good about the full boxed version is that you can reinstall it to 1 pc over and over again. but if you are planning to reinstall just 1 time to 1 pc, then the oem legal copy will suffice. but in my experience, using the oem legal copy can be activated; it is just a bit annoying if you have upgraded your pc with its hardware. then you need to call the 1800 number, so a microsoft customer service can assist you in reactivating your pc.
if you opted for an oem copy, it is also a good idea to make a backup of your harddrive (usually c drive, or where windows folder is) using a backup software like acronis true image after you have activated it. so the next time, you want to reinstall windows. you can just reinstall windows and acronis true image/ or the backup software of your choice, then restore the activated backup. (it is a good idea to keep this backup in an external harddrive for safe keeping.)
If you completely wipe your drive, and you can not find your original CD then your best bet is to buy a licensed edition; however’ first, if you have a system handy that works, go to the Microsoft site and see if they have an edition to install. Plus if it were a registered licensed copy, they may be able to help you so that a new purchase is not necessary. On the Microsoft site you can also contact support and they will respond.
Good Luck.
to buy a new OS disk it will cost too high but if you have a budget why not but if you don’t to waste money only to buy a disk that cost high just ask some of your fiends if they have a disk then try to barrow it…
if you have a recovery partition you can use it
If you need to wipe and format then no, you can not use or peform an upgrade. You need to download or purchase a full version to do this. Upgrades are only for switching between two OS’s and upgrading to a superior version, home basic to home premium as example. An upgrade also does not wipe completely either, nor does a format. To delete all information for good, after install of new XP, download a system utility to wipe C which will clean all deleted info of C and make perm. unrecoverable.
