If you are updating from Winos XP or some higher version to Windows 7, an automatic update is run which backup all the data, installed files and saved application settings.
If you freshly install Windows 7 in your PC, it will remove all the installed applications and saved settings.
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here’s what it takes:
•1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
•1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
•16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
•DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Hi,
First, an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 is a much more arduous and difficult process than upgrading from Vista and may take a long time (Microsoft says this upfront in the video tutorial found here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7).
Second, if the speed of your system is the only issue and you don’t mind keeping XP, just try reformatting your hard drive and doing a clean reinstall of XP. I guarantee you your system will be snappier.
Some things to keep in mind though: Be sure to backup everything first, and be sure you have all necessary drivers. Many times, when you do a clean reinstall, some or most drivers might be missing, so your display might not show the proper resolution or you may not be able to connect to the internet. So make sure you have these drivers beforehand.
Also, if your computer was purchased way back in 2004, it’s getting pretty old in computer-years. So if you do decide to upgrade, make sure all your specs meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 7.
Well on Windows XP you will have to do a clean Install anyway so you cant buy an upgrade version you have to buy the full version and, belongs your computer has the specs to run the win 7. As doing a clean install wipe your hard-drive clean so yes it would run faster.
Have you actually tried to reinstall Windows XP? I would try that before buying another OS! How much free space is on your hard drive? That could have a bearing as the OS needs a fair amount to operate effectively.
Even if the PC was bought back in 2004, it should still be fast enough to boot within 3 to 4 minutes.
Best method: reinstall Windows.
Once you’ve done that, take your time to read this page and educate yourself:
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2009/12/you-dont-need-to-regularly-reinstall-windows-heres-why/
If you want to upgrade to Windows 7 — that’s fine, however you need to check that your system has enough RAM and processor power to handle your new OS.
It sounds like a either the computer hasn’t been wiped since 2004 (in that case it will run slow because they accumulate rubbish over time that slows them down) or it has a low amount of RAM. I’m guessing it’s the latter.
To do a quick check to see how much you have do this:
* Click on the start button
* Right click on My Computer
* Left Click on properties
A box will then open. Give it some time to load all the information and in the bottom right corner you’ll see ‘xxx of RAM’
If it says 256 or 512 then upgrading to windows 7 won’t be much of an improvement. After some time you’ll be back to square 1. You can buy some more RAM which will improve things but I’d still recommend staying with XP. (But buying the right type and installing it is a different question ;D)
If it’s 1GB or more then upgrading to Windows 7 might be an option.
