I am wanting to add some more RAM to my computer. But I don’t know what to get. Mine is a custom built computer so I cant go by brand and model. I do however have the owners manual for my mother board.
This is the information listed;
FOXCONN 865A01 User manual. four 184-pin slots with DDR DIMM for installation of DDR 400/333/226 memory bank.
The computer that I want to add RAM to has never been hooked to the internet and has no virus or firewall software so internet diagnostic is not possible. That computer has been dedicated to at home gaming and personal projects. I want to get it upgraded and ready to hook up to internet to play WoW.
I looked inside, and I am only using two of the four slots. I remember them telling me when the system was built, it was shared RAM. But the original RAM was only 256MB and that went bad after about a year and they replaced it with 512MB RAM So that’s what I have, a total of 512MB of ram. I want to upgrade up to a Gigabyte.
Couple of questions; Can I just add a couple more memory banks? Does it matter if they are the same brand or not? Do I have to replace the ones I have and get all new when I do the upgrade. Does RAM have some kind of driver like video cards or is it some thing the computer just automatically recognizes and uses? which do I have the 400/333/226? If I can just add to what I have, what should it be?
Mother boards max RAM is 1G & my operating system is XP.

Ok first look up your motherboard and see the max ram and thats the most ram you can put on the motherboard, dont go over because then youll lose ram. There are many different sizes of ram cards 128mb, 256mb, 512mb, 1gb, 2gb, 3gb, and such. Depending on the max ram go and get what you need to equal your max ram, doesnt really matter what brand it is. make sure you get the 184-pinDDR(there are different types of ram cards). U can just add to what you have already in there.
Refer your motherboard manual for the amount of RAM, it can support.
Most of them support max 2 GB RAM.
I will suggest you to replace the RAM with new one and not to mix up with older one to avoid the clock speed issue.
Ok heres the deal, ram can be interchange with brands and size and frequency. However, not type! Ie., DDR, DDR2, DDR3 ECT. Also, the highest frequency RAM will only operate at the lowest frequencied module installed. Obviously you have a little older machine as its using only DDR-SDRAM at crucial ther is a sytem anylizer that can tell you exactly what you can use. Since your on the net got to crucial, download and save thier system anylizer to a flashdrive,disk whatever and install it on the other PC it or you can go to thier site and just seek by motherboard specs too and it’ll tell you that way without going through the afore mentioned. IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO HAVE MATCHED PAIRS OF THE SAME RAM!!!! SINCE YOU HAVE 4 SLOTS YOU CAN EASILY PUT 4 GIGS BUT THIS’LL ONLY BE UTILIZED IF YOUR OS IS 64 BIT. If your OS is 32 bit just get 2 or 3 gigs.
