Hi,
The computer runs slow in certain cases like Disk fragmentation, registry fragmentation, a number of startup programs & services, a large occupied disk space, a number of installed programs.
Performing some system optimization tasks will surely boost the system performance and stops it from freezing. In addition to this, installing more RAM, a Graphics Card and upgrading the Processor is also recommended.
[A] Defrag the Registry:
1. Download, install and open RegInOut.
2. Close all other programs and windows before starting the process.
3. Click "Defragmenter".
4. Click "Analyze" button.
5. Follow the on screen instructions.
[B] Defrag the Disk Drives:
1. Click: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter.
2. Select one or more partitions to deframent.
3. Click "Defragment" button to start the job.
4. Wait for completion. Close the window after it has been finished.
[C] Manage Startups:
1. For Windows XP, click Start | Run. For Windows Vista/ 7, click Start.
2. Type "MsConfig" (without quotes) and press ENTER.
3. From the "Startup" and "Services" tab, disable the unnecessary programs and services.
4. Click Apply -> OK.
5. Restart the system for the changes to take effects.
[D] Free-Up the Disk Space:
1. Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup.
2. Select a drive, and click OK.
3. Check-up the items you wish to clean.
4. Click OK button.
5. After completion, clean the remainning drives.
[E] Uninstall Unused Programs:
1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. For Windows XP, click "Add or Remove Programs". For Windows Vista/ 7, click Programs | Uninstall a Program.
3. Select an unused program, and click "Uninstall" button.
4. Follow the uninstall wizard, and restart the system after completion.
[F] Optimize the System for Best Performance rather than Best Appearance:
1. Right click My Computer icon.
2. Select "Properties".
3. In case of Windows Vista/ 7, click "Advanced System Settings" at the left hand side.
4. Click Advanced tab, and click "Settings" button from the "Performance" frame.
5. Select the option "Adjust for Best Performance", and then click OK -> OK.
First you have to identify just what’s going on with your computer. First observation is that your RAM is extremely low. If possible upgrade to at least 1Gig and 2 would be better. Since you have very little RAM your computer may be caching pages onto disk. This also slows computer performance. If you have not defragged your computer not only will paging be slow but depending on how fragmented your hard drive is it may be horribly slow.
First step, defrag your hard drive. This may take awhile. Second step, get more ram.
You didn’t mention virus protection. You should also scan for viruses if you do not have anything running to automatically eliminate them. There are sites that allow you to do registry scans and identify issues with your computer. The hope is that you’ll buy the product. Once you see how many problems exist you’ll be motivated to purchase their product. The good news is the scanning is free. The bad news is unless you buy the product you can’t fix any issues. More good news is there’s a site that lists several of these software products and one product doesn’t always catch everything. Run all the products and see what they detect. You also get the use of the product and determine if you like any of them. If you do consider springing for the software and preventing this from happening in the future.

Cleaning the registry with unreliable tools does exactly what happened to you – the registry got damaged. Hopefully you got it backed up before cleaning it. If yes, restore the backup and everything should be back to normal.
If you decide to clean the registry in the future, use reliable software like Auslogics Registry Cleaner and CCleaner. Both are free and both create a backup before changing anything.
