There really is no need to spend $20 or any other sum. CCleaner has a really good registry cleaner, as well as Microsoft’s Live OneCare Cleanup Scan. Both work fast and quite well. I’ve used CCleaner for almost a year, cleaning my PC weekly of other crap, then cleaning the registry. Unless I keep it cleaned up, it doesn’t get slower, it just won’t shut down. So, I found that if I run my antispyware (SuperAntiSpyware and Ad-Aware), then CCleaner, my old PC perks right up.

okay do this and judge for yourself
google softpedia.com
enter ccleaner in the search box
download and use the registry cleaner – as you are skeptical: say yes to making a backup when asked
go back to softpedia and download and use Spybot Search & Destroy (it is only necessary to enter ‘spybot’ when searching)
The results will speak for themselves
I also suggest getting Avira Free and if you like it buy the upgrade
Although if you are buying an AV package then Kaspersky is the best (in recent reviews – because it changes periodically)
The very best thing you can do is to believe no-one (I never do until I’ve seen proof) Unfortunately doing this would be very difficult unless you have lots of AV packages to test over and over. Reviewers, however, do exactly that. Some reviews are ill-prepared and some are paid for (biased) but if you look at enough you will come to a consensus.
Google ‘antivirus reviews’ click on and open at least 10 or 20 tabs then go through them.
I agree with Paul S.
CCleaner works – i have used this myself for a couple of years now.
As an additional bonus, you can use it as a temp file remover (after a week of normal surfing, this can clear up about 100 MB of crap)
And also to uninstall installed applications – or remove the references from the registry.
Best about it – it is free 🙂
For somebody who doesn’t know what they’re doing, CCleaner is pretty safe. For the more advanced and pros there is "easy cleaner" that has a lot more than registry cleaning options. Of course you always use these at your own risk.
They do work if you get a legitimate one.
There are quite a lot of fake ones that get you to use the free version, which slows your computer down, and then try to get you to buy the full version to speed it back up again.
A good, free reg cleaner that does work is: http://ccleaner.com
Yes.
Microsoft Registry Problems = Slow Computer!
The Windows registry, stored on your computer and in several files, records the interaction between hardware, memory space, and addressing. Containing information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of your computer, whenever you make a change to the Control Panel settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry. The Windows operating system
continually references this information during its operation.
When the Windows registry becomes very large, your computer’s can become very slow and it can cause it to be unstable. Some computer users will spend a lot of time and effort going through the registry and trying to fix the slow computer manually. Not only can this be a daunting and frustrating task, it is also a very risky one.
Clean your Registry can make your computer faster
Most computer users find this task confusing and time consuming and those who are not advanced computer experts run the risk of permanently damaging their system by trying to fix their windows registry manually. Using a registry clean and repair application is the fastest, easiest, and safest way to fix a slow computer. While there are a number of registry repair applications available, few offer a comprehensive set of features that enable you to completely clean your registry safely. It is crucial that you choose a Windows registry repair product that you can trust.
