I have a windows 98 computer that ran perfectly fine. Except for a couple problems is had that accumulated over it’s many years, it’s been a perfect computer.
In an attempt to clean it out and fix the problems, I downloaded the free windows registry cleaner, and ran it, it apparently deleted all my registry file because all the icons on my desktop changed to the nondescript windows symbol and open with "open with…" when I click a program on the menu, it either transforms all the icons on my desktop to that program, or in the case of an exe file, I try to select "program" it only says it cannot locate "C:\desktop\program, make sure the libraries are correct". There was an option in the registry cleaner program that could undo what it did, but with the inability to start the program or most any other program, I don’t want to restore them myself, something might go wrong.
my files and computer are important to me, and I’ll be on messenger for any willing help also. thanks all.

Try this:
Windows makes and stores a backup of the registry when you start your computer successfully each day. By default, five previous copies or the registry are stored. To restore one of these previous copies: 1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you are running Windows Me, start your computer with the startup disk.
2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.
3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.
4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER.NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.
5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.
Now before i start with anything regards your problem, i have to ask you,WHY are you still using win 98 when it has ceased support of any kind for over 12 mths.
Meaning you cannot get drivers for any M/S program. Also if you are still running this ops system your puter has to be old also, at least 8 years old.
May i suggest if you have the ram and hard drive capabilites, up grade to xp at least. Not only for you but you computer, it will love you..
As for the use of a registry cleaner, you didn’t check it before you used it,,,,they are very nastie pieces of software.
Kiss those files good bye, hello new op’s system.
its better you run registry healer software for recovery..
