First, check the drivers for you ethernet card (NIC) XP should automatically detect it and give it a generic driver that should work, but some NIC brands require you do install a specific driver, the drivers for your NIC should be on the NIC manufacturers or the computer manufacturers website, download the drivers on a computer that is connected to the internet, put them on a floppy, a flash drive, or burn them to a CD, then load the driver on your computer and install
Next, depending on how your ISP (in this case, your phone company) offers it's service, you may be required to enter a username and password for your account, if so, you should have it either in an email, on a paper in you ISP kit, or you should be able to call in with your account information and request it
You will need to find out the Brand and model of your LAN device and do a search for it's drivers. Preferably the Brands website. Put them on a floppy or USB stick from another computer and install on yours. You should be on your way back to the Internet.
yes your network drivers

Reinstall the driver file
You probably need to reinstall the driver for your network card. The DSL modem is connects to your computer via the network/Ethernet port so that's what isn't working, not the modem.
Your computer probably came with a software CD which includes drivers for the video, network, sound etc.
