I agree with Charles Dennis, i recommend taking it to Geek Squad as well
Take out your 2GB chip and keep it and send it back. The DV9000 even though you replaced your motherboard, still has the Nvidia chip problem that will crash again in the future.
Also Vista is horrible, if the Compaq comes with Win7 get it. Win7 is MUCH faster (and looks and feels similar to Vista) so you wont have to re-learn much
I would reccomend taking it to Geek Squad or something so that they can determine an appropriate solution to your problem.
Linux is great though pretty bumpy at first and lacks several features that you might expect like interoperability with iOS devices, not something to go over to entirely unless you actually have some familiarity first. You can always to do both and is what I would recommend if you’re interested.
I’d go for the new hardware, especially if it comes with 7 on it. Even if you can’t or won’t pull some of the RAM to save, an new stick isn’t going to be much more expensive than buying a copy of 7, and with 7 you may not fell the need to upgrade the ram.
