First with 512mb ram you need to put xp on it, or upgrade to about 2 gb ram if you can, which a duo should be able too… Vista is a ram hog and in my opinion a rip off of mac OS X… Then run hijackthis and clean out your auto start by going to start – run – msconfig
Yeah its the low ram, some of it is reserved for other functions, so waiting for it to stay at 100% usage would only serve to keep you occoupied.
To run vista well you should get 2 x 1GB sticks, but no less than 1GB if you hope to have it run semi-decent. Obviously the more you add, the more it will use, but the more efficiently it will run and the more you can multi-task without delays.
Check crucial.com for the max you can use and then goto newegg.com to actually buy the amout of that you want. Cheaper than buying in stores with more selection.
Dell should be ashamed for selling a dual-core laptop with that low of ram, its just a scam to make you think your getting a steal, they know you’ll be back to buy ram. Make the joke on them though, buy it for less from lower priced retailers like newegg.
Until you can get more ram i’d suggest turning off most of the visual features of vista, they are only there to make it look pretty and glossy, but its hogs ram like you can only imagine.
I run 4GB in my laptop, with dual-core designed for the multi-taskers, lots of ram is the key.
