So, if I erased important computer software (sound card, video card, the works), is that fixable?

You positively DO NOT need to "just buy another computer". If you’re able to connect to the internet, you simply need to reinstall the "device drivers". You can connect to microsoft.com and search for the "drivers" you need. If you’re not able to connect to the internet, there should be a CD that came with your computer that contains the device drivers. From that CD you could reinstall everything (assuming new hardware wasn’t added after your original purchase – in this case, again, there should be a CD containing your needed drivers.) Hope this helps.
No, you don’t need to pay. Go the manufacturer’s website that made your computer and go to the drivers and downloads section. You can find all the drivers you need there (sound, video, etc…)
download the software/drivers off their websites.
