I believe I encountered a rogue software last week. Received a pop up for a trojan virus. Ran my AVG software and thought I repaired system. Now windows close on their own. I cannot update windows or any antivirus. I have run AVG, Avast, SuperAntiSpyware and yahoo antivirus….nothing is found. I can not do a system restore, nor can I start up in safe mode (F8). I am running Windows XP. Can someone tell me where to turn next

you probably still have some sort of an infection, your best bet is too go to bleeping computer.com.the professionals there can help you find your infection and remove it.
You will have to format your hard drive, unfortunately. I'm sorry to hear this. I hate hackers, and the piss off is that they do it for an adrenaline high.
It's actually guite boring and geeky.
Don't bother with safe mode. Just pack up your importany files, and programs on disk, make sure you are not going to loose anything important and run the system disk, XP, and when it asks to delete a partition, do it if you can. The save a new partition in it's place. You willl find it asks you this while is runs in CMOS or whatever it is you use.
