I need some help regarding my laptop.

Several days ago the laptop stop working properly. I now only boots up to the desktop screen of windows but displays no icons or anything just the screen and wallpaper. Have tried to use safe mode, last known good configurations , pressed the start key , pressed other keys but nothing works.

Therefor I need help on what to do next. My thought is that I need to boot it up and run disk check , disk repair in bios. Since its a laptop it has no hard disk drive.

Does anyone know where I can find the software to unable booting into dos direct using a CD rom ?

or if there is a cheap cable I can get to link the hard drive of the Laptop to my normal PC and repair , re-install windows that way then let me know.

Thanks

I have a dell inspiron 1520 laptop its about 2 yrs old now when it boots up i get an error sayin windows failed to start due to a recent hardware or software problem and i get the option of lauch startup repair or start windows normally when I start it normally the screen blinks blue then it goes black and reboots

I’m currently running on Windows XP. I want to install Windows Vista. When I installed Windows XP, the setup ran when I first restarted the computer. I tried doing that with Vista, changing the priority to the DVD drive. It totally skips the DVD drive and just boots up my hard drive? Does anybody know why?

Its a laptop, that had some kind of Windows test version, I guess the one right before they came out with Vista, because that’s what it looks like. It says "Windows 2007 Test version only". So I was just gonna get rid of it. I have a New Windows I wanted to load onto it.

It boots alright, starts to load some of the drivers, get to the screen where it asks you if you want to repair press x, install press ENTER.

Before I have the time to press install, the whole thing shuts down.
Every time.

Can you help me?

The stats:
Computer = Compaq Presario V2000
Software = Windows XP Home Edition (not a rip, store bought)
lol Can you explain how to do that innnnnn Simple Terms?

But its also not Vista. Its a Test Version of Windows 2007, that looks and acts like Vista. It says on the bottom of the screen

"Windows 7
For testing purposes only. Build 7000"
Also, the laptop may have a nasty virius from the previous owner. It shuts off if I boot from CD, but also Ive found, if I do disk clean up, the laptop will shut down as well. I think theres something protecting it self. Am I crazy lol

BSOD: Copied over /repair/software and now can’t login!?
My work computer recently stopped working. When I boot it up, it gives me blue screen with hive message can’t find system32\config\system. I went into recovery console but it wanted admin password which I don’t have and corporate won’t give me. I don’t want to send it in and wait to get it back, so I hooked up hdd to a desktop and copied c:\windows\repair\software to c:\windows\system32\config\sof… Put hdd back into laptop and booted up and it boots into windows! However, it doesn’t recognize my username/password anymore. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks!
i’m not hacking it; i’m simply fixing it like i would if it were mine, but now my username/pw no longer works; i’m in IT, but i’ve never run into this problem before; they can’t give me the admin pw because it’s the same for the entire company, but i can fix it on my own to save the company a lot of money; and i’ve made backups so everything i do is reversible; i simply need this to work so I can do my job
Well this is the answer I get? And from a "top contributor" at that.
