What is happening is that the toshiba sign will come up and then the toshiba box but then when it is time for the sign in page to show the screen goes blank with no light. I can log in blindly and I hear everything start up but the screen is blank. Any ideas about what the problem is and how to fix it would be appreciated.

come up in safe mode with vga support, (lower resolution) and see if you can see it then. change the default resolution to soething lower in the display settings.
its some cable inside the laptop. probably a ribbon cable. i would get it fixed
3 things can be wrong here:
Broken video card and/or Monitor
Resolution size was changed and it is not supported by your monitor
Drivers failed and need to be reinstalled.
Maybe your CCFL. Its the florescent light that lights the laptops screen. Happened to my Hp a while back.
