Question 1. NO
2. NO
3. NO
4.?
5.Its possible registry cleaner would mess something up, it always is possible, if your going to un-install everything, I suggest reformatting instead, then you will have a clean computer for sure..
6.I dont use registry cleaners for reason I said above.
7.You don’t need one. Windows does that anyway.
8.n/a
9. Depends on what you want to do with it.
Matt Just wants to waste your money. I have and old Emachines with a 996 MHZ Celeron with 256 MB of Ram and XP Pro. I can IM, Surf the net, do Homework, and use Windows media Player 9. Don’t upgrade your ram, you can do allot if you are worried about performance, w/out spending a dime!!
1.) Go to >Start>Run>Type msconfig>and then go to startup tab. turn everything off you don’t use.
2.)The best way to uninstall is Control panel, especially in older windows, but it still applys in XP
3.)Don’t use ram optimizers. Downloading those with give you spyware and make it slower. Get Spy Bot Search and Destroy..search it on Google, and use the on that the home page is a huge world map. Use the one that doesn’t ask for donations and stuff!!
4.)Don’t be so worried about the registry—-its windows, and there is no good way to fix that…HA HA
5.) Uninstall any programs you don’t really use anymore. You will get a huge upgrade in extra usable ram without putting new ram in it physically.
6.) P.S. A last resort is to completely wipe Xp, and reinstall it with a retail version, or restore it with your Dell Restore disk. Dell probably has a Restore Cd that can completely reinstall every item that originally can with the computer—and will put your preformance back to optimal. You do lose all files and programs, so be sure to back those up on a flash drive, or CD.
Good luck, and I hope this helps.
CCleaner is supposedly the best free system cleaner, personally i use Registry Mechanic, it costs money but its the bomb. Memory Optimizers are kind of lame, i found, it might help systems that have lower memory but when it cycles and cleans up your memory it taxes your system. That kind of defeats the purpose, i think. I’m not sure what your questions about programs are, if a program isn’t running, its not using anything but system space on the harddrive. a lot of people think that the less programs you have on your computer the better it will run, but i find that a little silly. whats the point of having a harddrive that will hold a certain amount of stuff and you can’t actually put that much stuff on there? know what i’m saying? little things like shortcuts on the desktop can slow your computer down, but is the amount that it does really substantial?
you might want to check http://www.tigerdirect.com too, you might be able to upgrade some stuff for less money than you think. 247 mb of ram is NOT gonna cut it these days, man. at least double it. 512 is REALLY minimum. trust me, i’ve delt with worse, i know from experience. remember to do regular defrags, you’d be surprised how much a defrag can help. keep the computer physically clean too, open it up and get all the dust out, but be VERY careful. don’t vacuum and don’t touch, use a can of air and make sure you’re not carrying a ton of static electricity. having a really dusty system can be worse than anything you do software wise.
hope it helps a little
Programmes held on the drive but inactive do not affect performance, unless you reach about 80% full on the disk. If by standalone you mean background programmes, yes they do, and the less of them you download the better, some carry spyware, trojans etc. If you are short on memory, it is quite cheap now and my experience of extra memory management software is that they often make the problem worse. Windows does a pretty good job of managing memory. To uninstall always use the control panel/add remove method. If you delete programmes which are installed you can make the system slower and unstable, the system may still be trying to access parts of them. Once any part of it is deleted the uninstaller will fail. If they do not show in add remove, they may have an uninstaller on the start menu.
o programs hurt performance when they are not running?
NO. Just make sure you don’t have unnecessary programs in your start up.
if so will programs continue to hurt performance after being uninstalled and a registry clean? See above.
do standalone programs hurt performance when they are not being used? NO!
if not where can i get some?(already seen http://www.portableapps.com) Depends on what you need!
If i uninstalled everything and ran a registry cleaner would my computer perform like new again, or would the cleaner miss stuff? In that case format the drive and install from scratch.
What is the best free registry cleaner? Never found one and will usually do it manually.
do ram optimizers really have an effect on low memory systems? Not much, buying memory is the way to go.
if so what effect and what is the best free optimizer?
I don’t use them.
what is the best way to uninstall software? (control panel, software provided uninstall software, delete from "program files" then run registry clean)
Either from the control panel – add/remove programs, or go to Start – All Programs – Program name and look for an uninstall option. That should also clean the Program Files
I am not going to even answer these questions…You need more RAM..XP needs 512MB to run efficiently. Most computer need in excess of 1Gig of RAM.
