OK…I have to clear something up that one of the first posters mentioned. Ad-Aware and other spyware/ad-ware programs DO NOT GET RID OF VIRUS ACTIVITY! They ARE important to have, though, since they get rid of things that affect the way your computer runs.
Another poster gave some great links for you to utilize! PLEASE UTILIZE THEM!!!!!!!
When you install an antivirus program such as Norton or McAffe, you are only allowed a certain period of having updated definitions before you have to re-subscribe (AND PAY!) to update it. You cannot just uninstall it and expect it to work again. These people keep coming up with definitions to help you….PAY THEM if you use the software.
AVG is a pretty decent anti-virus program that is free entirely, although I completely use Norton.
Ad-Aware is one I also recommend to get rid of ads that are tossed on your machine (and tracking cookies) by various things online or things you may download from the internet. You can do a search for it on Yahoo to get the link if it isn’t posted above.
I also use Spybot Search and Destroy. It is also free and gets rid of Spyware. It also has a tea-time feature that sits in the corner and protects you in real-time.
The other I use is Spyware Blaster. Run it and it will also help you become immune to certain things.
The key, though, is to run these programs on a regular basis (even the anti-virus) to keep things clean. Before running them, make sure you check for updated definitions, as well, as things are coming out EVERY DAY that are nasty.
go to pc pitstop.com sign up and you can find many great virus scans that are free.McAFEE sucks if you ask me.i got nortin anti virus and spyware and it never let me down yet

I have had over 30,000 viruses on my computer ( mainly limewire), heres how I fixed it :
1. Nod32 ( Yearly Fee ) – Found and Deleted 27,007 Viruses
2. Adaware ( Free ) – Found and Deleted 1,000 Viruses
Acording to the program, although they may have just been cookies)
3. Spybot ( Free ) – Found and Deleted 2,000 + Viruses ( Acording to the program, although they may have just been cookies)
4. Mozilla Firefox ( Free ) – Protects from getting viruses from your explorer.
Note : Macafee destroyed my cousins hard drive ( all data was un-recoverable, Also professional gamers have informed me that Norton is the deffinition of a virus ( Doesnt protect you, burys itself into your hard drive, and takes up tremendous space)
I use AVG which is free & better than McAfee.
