If you want free softwares that would protect you I ould suggest you a combo…
AVG free edition, spywareblaster, threatfire free and sunbelt kerio personal firewall 4 (trial version 30 days after that it would be free).
i like this free guide which covers many free antivirus/antispyware programs.
http://www.spywareinsider.com/removal.html
GO ON GOOGLE SEARCH SIMANTEC.COM AND GET THE FREE 30 DAY TRIAL AND SCAN YOUR COMPUTER
(NORTON IS ALSO GOOD)
I have experience with free security systems and find that to get real good security the paid works best and does more than free. Do yourself a favor and invest around $40.00 for a years worth of Norton Symantec Basic Virus protection. Ask yourself is 40 dollars a year worth paying to secure and protect my pc ? It is for me.
I also have win/vista and my laptop came with Norton (trial) I didn’t like it and also took up too much space. I downloaded avast and spybot. Both are free and work wonderfully. You might want to try ccleaner also. You can download all three for free @ download.com. Just don’t run them at the same time. I have no problems all all. try em!! Good luck!
if you want to buy security software try nod32 or kaspersky as your antivirus, webroot spysweeper or spyware doctor as your antispyware, and if you want get zonealarm pro as your firewall.
that is if you want to buy them.
there are alot of free tools now, that are just as good. here is my recommendations.
antivirus: try AntiVir or Avast or AVG (all of them are great)
antipsyare: superantispyware AND spyware terminator (both are essential)
firewall: comodo
all these you can find at:
http://www.filehippo.com
Avast! Home Edition is free
http://www.avast.com/
AVG Free Edition

The best anti-virus (in my opinion) is NOD32. But it does cost some money..

Comodo firewall+avira antivir+spyware terminator all of them are free and are excellent choices. I only add spywareblaster and advanced windowscare to that combo. you can download all of them at download.com Be patient because this take some time to get it done and do it at list once per month.
