All my machines are on XP so I have to do this from memory but it’s something like this to get it to work:
Go to network connections and right-click your connection, select properties and make sure that you have Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Microsoft IP6 both installed and checked. If one is missing click on Add Protocol and browse for it.
Maybe try a system restore, im not sure if it is the registry program that may have caused that to happen, but also try a different network cable, or resort to calling your ISP and having them reset your modem. With comcast you are able to do it yourself, but I know with verizon their modems go back to complete factory default, which then requires you to call them.
I had encountered the same problem as you. What I did is reset the modem (unplug the power for a few seconds) every time I switched from using xbox live to my computer or the other way around.
I recommend that you spend a few bucks to buy a router, I ended up doing that myself.
