Anti-viruses –
Both of these top two scanners have similar (Great) detection rates and are “neck and neck” as the best Free anti-virus if you ask me.
Avast – FREE – ( http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download ) OR
Avira – FREE – ( http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus )

AV Comparative Report for 2010( http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreviews/summary-reports) AND according to the newest, May 2011 reviews, Avira and Kaspersky take top honors.
As far as Microsoft Security Essentials is concerned … http://preview.tinyurl.com/3ednu7g amd http://preview.tinyurl.com/62prw64 are two links from resources, I have trusted (Langa, for years) that prove MSE have issues with viruses and Malware infections, that some other

The two that I would recommend 100% are very easy to configure and use, and which are both free

Malware/Spyware related –
These are great programs to have, but do not confuse them with anti-viruses. AV’s can detect malware and these scanners COULD detect viruses, but my advice would be to have both types of scanners on your system. ..
Some people say, free malware scanners are not any good and do not remove infections. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The key to whats in the Pro version you pay for is the "real time" or "background" scanning running all the time … This downside, can be "bypassed" by running scans from time to time with the free versions and USING common sense on the web. Also, its a good idea to run scans from time to time ("just to be safe") and ANY detected items CAN and WILL BE (with user’s permission) removed by the free scanners.
Both of these are free and have excellent records at removing malware/spyware infections… they really are the two best best options
MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ )
And
Super Anti-Spyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/ )
I have seen people with AV scanners like Norton think they are malware free and they (with computer issues) scan with MB and then they find they are loaded with malware.

AVG.com an effective anti- virus program for free. I haven’t had an intrusion in over a year.
Malwarebytes works wonderfully, I own it myself, but it is also free.
Use a combination of:
avast!
