Once upon a time it was a fast computer? Yes? then reformat your HDD!
If you want to make it ALOT faster without spending money, then you wont be able to do anything.
You can run some virus scans, and do a disk defragmenter and disk cleanup, but that wont help much.
You could download PC optimizers such as Advanced System Optimizer 3 or Tune Up Utilities. You will most likely have to buy them unless you have the skill to crack them other wise just buy one of them I recommend Advanced System Optimizer 3.
Options with a price tag:
– Add RAM
– Change processor (if possible)
– Add more and faster storage
Free options:
– Start with the obvious, delete any unnecessary applications using Control Panel, Programs and Features on Windows -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Uninstall-or-change-a-program
– Delete unnecessary files using Disk cleanup in Windows -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Delete-files-using-Disk-Cleanup
– Run a Windows disk scan (CHKDSK) to make sure your disk is clear of bad sectors -> http://www.windows-help-central.com/windows-vista-chkdsk.html (I suggest running this process overnight, since it could take many hours depending on the size of the disk and the space usage rate)
– Run the Windows System File Checker tool (SFC) to check the integrity of your Windows operating system files -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
– Obtain a free registry cleanup tool, such as Ccleaner, to delete unnecessary “orphan” registry entries that could slow down your system to a crawl. Ccleaner is also a good and safe replacement for the Windows Disk cleanup tool and Add/Remove programs -> http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
– Use the Windows MSCONFIG tool to disable unnecessary startup programs. -> http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/index.html
– Run the Disk Defragmenter tool to tidy up your hard disk data -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Improve-performance-by-defragmenting-your-hard-disk
– Apply all Windows updates and make sure to update all your video, network, sound, printer drivers to the latest versions. Also upgrade your computer BIOS. Consult your computer manufacturer’s web site support section for additional information on driver and BIOS updates.
