One way is to increase your virtual memory, you can also try this, go to your computer’s desktop, right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Advanced, Performance, Settings, under Visual Effects, select: Adjust for best performance and apply, your desktop won’t look as beautiful but hey you will get slightly better performance.
After that is done, you can change your virtual memory by going in the same menu, to the Advanced tab, click on the Change button at Virtual memory, and click on Custom Size, a safe and effective setting is around 2047MB. Click on apply.
This is just a 2 minute tweak but may help you squeeze that little bit more out of your pc. Things like disabling sysrestore would also help.
cheapest and easiest way to speed up the puter would be to increase the memory, heres how to do that http://www.kingston.com/tools/umg/umg07.asp
the other. more expensive, route would be to replace the motherboard, CPU and memory to something newer

your computer might have old hardware, so that would need a hardware update. maybe more ram, a better cpu perhaps? if you list your computer’s hardware that would help.
scanning, defraging, deleting temp files, making sure that no useless processes are running in the background will help if you are sure this is not a hardware problem
spybot
defrag
delete temporary files

It works very well.
