I use an Compaq Presario SR1103WM when I'm at my Dad's house. We've had it for about 2 or 3 years, and used it for everything from games to internet to whatever you can think of. However, it's outdated now, but I can't afford any major upgrades or to buy a new computer right now, so I'm trying to figure out how to run it better. The only specs I know are:
248 RAM (8mb is diverted to video memory) max is 1 GB
Intel Celeron(P) 325 2.56 GHz
40 GB HD
I have no clue about what the video card is, I've had it 3 years and still can't figure it out. Sorry the specs aren't very informative, but you could probably Google the rest if you need it. Right now it's on a dial-up connection, which I only use for instant messaging. Like I said, as of right now I can't really afford to upgrade it, but here in about a month I can. We're also getting Road Runner for it, which should speed up the internet connection a bit. Besides upgrading it, what else could I do to make it faster?
Also, I have deleted a lot of old software that I don't ever use anymore, and I just figured out how to clean the hard drive, so I did that for the first time in 3 years and it is sped up slightly.

If you dont want to upgrade hardware,There are some softwares you can download to speed up your computer.
First,You should Fix Corruption and Errors within your registry. The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner—Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:
http://speed-up-pc.info/index.php?t=speedpc
lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.
Second,Get rid of spyware/adware in your computer.spyware/adware hamper your computer's performance. It use system resources and slow your computer down.
So, to speed up your slow computer, use a registry cleaner software and clean your registry files first. It will make all the difference, and provide you with the immediate fix you need for your slow computer. Then, download a good anti-spyware to get rid of spyware/adware in your computer.
a memory upgrade(RAM) will go a long way
RAM RAM RAM…..also back up your files and restore it. that should speed it up some.
I will assume your operating system is Windows? Your 248 RAM is really lacking and will be slow without an upgrade. It will help If you click "Start", "Run" then type MSCONFIG in the box it will open the System Configuration panel. Choose the "Startup" tab and disable any non essential program from starting so they will not run in the background and eat up your resources
Delete all programs that you don't use.
Delete all files that you don't use (old pictures and stuff.)
Definately upgrad the RAM to its max.
Defrag your hard drive.
Update your anti-virus software (viruses that send things out from your PC use processor time, RAM and network bandwidth.)
Run a SpyWare program.
A new video card with a bunch of RAM (GEForce 2 or 3) would help a lot too.
Other then Defragmentation, you are running 248 megs of ram. I'm surprised you can run anything and its no surprise its running slow on you. The best thing you can do would be to at the very least upgrade the memory. You will see a huge leap in performance if you take it to 1 gig of memory.
Also being a older system the memory probably won't cost you much. Maybe 70-80 bucks for a gig. Try http://www.newegg.com for the best prices.
You need a dedicated video card (not the onboard shared memory video) and you need more RAM. Check the model number at hp.com and see what specific memory you can use to upgrade. I would go to 1GB of memory if you can. Make sure you get what part number HP recommends because some Compaq systems don't like generic RAM. You can use mwave.com or newegg.com with that part number and do a search. Going to a dedicated video card would free up all the memory for the system to use.
With dial up you won't get much of a faster internet speed. You may consider a DSL internet, which will speed the internet inmmensly.
Your RAM is low. You might want to add more RAM. The more RAM you have the less often the hard drive has to be accessed and the computer will run faster.
Best would be to format the hard drive and reinstall everything. It won't be possible if u don't have installation cds. Alternatively u can defrag the hard drive: Start> All Programs> Accessories> disk defragment.
Also fix your registry using some software like ccleaner free from ccleaner.com). This should fasten up the pc considerably.
Your ram is OK. I've used XP on 128mb ram
First off, you can add ram. Secondly, as a no cost solution – go to "Run" on the start menu and type "msconfig" – on the startup tab – turn everything off (except and virus and spyware protection you have – you should be able to recognize it) and click apply then ok. Itll ask you to restart and when you do it will show you a text box notifying you that you made a change. Simply check that checkbox and click ok. that should speed your system up. Ram is certianly an issue though, 248MB is actually below the recommended for Windows XP alone.
At minimum upgrade the ram, and if you need the storage get a new hard drive and make it the primary drive by using it as the boot device, newer hard drives are generally faster than old ones, and you can't have enough drive space
You may also want to run a defragmentation, and make sure not programs run in the backround that are not necessary.
Try these tips :
– Get a registry cleaning utility and clean your windows registry.
– Remove unwanted programs that load up when you start your OS.
– Use utilities which go easy on system resources. For example use winamp instead of (say) windows media player.
– avoid running too many applications at once.
– dont have too many windows open
cheerz!
