About the only things you might be able to do is upgrade your memory. If you want to try backing up all your data and reloading the PC, I personally reinstall my OS at least once a year kind of a spring cleaning for me. But Def upgrade your Ram
You would start with a new computer – or at least new CPU, mobo and RAM.
You could potentially switch to a flavor of Linux that might perform better, but you let’s face it – you are on Yahoo answers asking about how to make an 8 year old machine faster…
Unless you feel like reinstalling Windows XP and never- ever – install updates past Service Pack 1, it will never be "faster". And if you do that, you won’t be able to run a lot of today’s software that requires SP2.
Anyway, for just about $100 you can upgrade your guts and get probably about 3X the performance of your current machine:
New CPU and MOBO combo: $75.23 after shipping: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCombos.aspx?Item=N82E16813138111&SubCategory=22&SortField=0&PageSize=10&page=1 (select the first combo for $66)
New RAM: $25 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148163
Total is $103.57 shipped to you (assuming you are in the lower 48)
Trust me – this setup will blow your current hardware away and will get you another 7-8 years worth of use.
Also, it has the potential to upgrade down the road so you can make small investments as you need to (more RAM, video card, etc.).
Even if you have never built a computer, this combo is really easy. I build these lower end machines for folks all the time and it is a breeze.
Unless you have some funky case, then this board is small enough to fit into your existing one and the power supply you have will probably work just fine for now (it can use either 20 or 24-pin connecters).
*****No other answer is worth your time! *****
(Except of course other people recommending you upgrade your hardware as well)
