I wouldn’t go with Mcafee anything … it has proven itself to me to be one of the worst over and over again with poor detection and lagging of system resources (or so i have heard for the second one) .. There are many free programs that provide great detection that (obviously) don’t coust anything. I do however like one of the non-free scanners from years of experiences and that’s Eset’s NOD32 … over and over again for about 10 to 11 years it ranks EXTREMELY high.
Also, I’d suggest adding my (well not "my") must have program now. Malwarebytes for Malware Protection … again .. this program is free as well

These are a few tips to help secure your computer at least somewhat … .I am not saying none of these programs do not have false-alarms or you’ll be 100% protected all the time.. These are just a few tips.
Anti-viruses –
Both of these top two scanners have similar (Great) detection rates and are “neck and neck” as the best Free anti-virus if you ask me. Some sites say Avira is difficult to use, but I disagree.
1) Avast – FREE – ( http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download )
2) Avira – FREE – ( http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus )
Those are Free, but if you feel the need to want to pay for one (for whatever reason), try (3) Eset NOD32 ( http://www.eset.com/), which provides great protection and no system lag

Malware/Spyware related –
These are great programs to have, but do not confuse them with anti-viruses. AV’s can detect malware and these scanners COULD detect viruses, but my advice would be to have both types of scanners on your system.
The only two scanners I’d use for this are both freewares, the rest are honestly not needed. Both of these are free and have excellent records at removing malware/spyware infections.
MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ )
And
Super AntiSpyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/ )
I have seen people with AV scanners like Norton think they are malware free and they (with computer issues) scan with MB and then they find they are loaded with malware.
other software for malware:
Spyware Blaster( http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ )

An antivirus won’t make your computer run faster and smoother right away, but it’s pretty much essential if you want to keep it that way — since viruses can make a computer extremely slow and cause other problems.
Don’t go with McAfee. McAfee is not a very good software because it actually slows down your computer a lot. I would also avoid Norton (Norton works good for some people, but causes problems for others so its very hit-and-miss) and go with an alternative Antivirus such as ESET Smart Security.
