Avira AV, as mentioned, is a good choice. Microsoft Security Essentials is also very good.
Ad-Aware for spyware/malware is no longer the best there is and is quite a bloated piece of software. One of the better options is Malwarebyte’s Antimalware.
Avast 5 free anti-virus.Download at CNET http://www.download.com
Make sure you register it or the program ends in 30-60 days until it is.
You open the interface and it’s found in Maintenance.
Free antivirus? I guesss if it has to be free you could try AVG or Avast or Avira or Panda Cloud. But, really, you shop just pay for Trend Micro Internet Security (it’s pretty chep and a great program).
You’ll also probably want anti-malware. For that I would recommend Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware Free Edition.
I found Avira Antivirus to be the most effective one. I saw an test on antivirus programs, and the Avira program won, so I’m using it now.
