AVG is a good anti-virus software
Ad-ware will help remove virus and malware. A word of caution, however. Ad-ware and similar malware removal tools often seek to get rid of items they deemed that leaves the system vulnerable to attacks. For example: friendly adware like iWin plugins that are used for playing games. Although it is friendly and you may use them, the security software may look at them as a threat.
No system is really and truly safe, however, to keep any system as safe as possible you need a security solution: firewall, antivirus, malware, spyware
You already have a firewall (I hope you do not rely solely on windows firewall and therefore have a firewall such as Zone Alarm) which is good and you update regularly.
As I mentioned earlier AVG is a good, free anti-virus and Ad-ware is good as well for virus and malware protection.
Another malware protection software is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Lastly you should also get a anti-spyware. As antivirus and anti-malwares are not equipped to stop spyware. I would suggest Spybot Search and Destroy (S&D).
Either the spybot or Malwarebytes also searches your root kits as well to keep them safe.
Update and Scan Regularly. Don’t scan concurrently. Get a safe browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome or Safari
I hope this helps
Download and install a legitimate anti-spyware software. Choose from malwarebytes antimalware or superantispyware. Download links http://www.pcrisk.com/top-spyware-removers Both are free and does a great job at detecting and removing spyware. Download, install and update before running a full system scan.
If you combine these programs with AVG or Avast free editions you will have a secure computer. Also don’t forget your common sense when surfing the net. Common sense is the best protection 🙂
Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need.
Microsoft Security Essentials protects you against viruses, spyware and other malware, it provides quiet protection against malware, it only alerts you when it is necessary.

By the way, Microsoft Security Essentials version 2 will be released either at the end of this month or sometime next month, remember to upgrade to the latest version when it prompts you to, follow the instructions to upgrade.

avast free edition
AVG is good, im now too impressed with Avast myself…but who knows.
The new Microsoft Security Essentials is making waves, can’t hurt to try.
If you think you are infected because the computer is slow etc..
you may want to check out my site, its a quick read and has decent easy to read
