his is very good tool and I recommend it to keep your pc in good running condition,
Windows Advanced Care , This tool will keep your computer running good and you can see the startup programs to help you understand what runs in the startup programs; It also includes a registry cleaner and spyware removal,, It also imunizes your computer against the attcks we face each time we go on the internet Just run it once a day and your worrys are much less,
http://www.download.com/Advanced-Windows…
Here is a very good tool called Winpatrol and it monitors your computer for programs that try to run on your system without your knowlege, This tool also allows you to manage all the startup programs on your computer,, It also warns you if a program tries to run without your permission, I use this software and I recommend it,

Avira’s AntiVir…. highest rated free anti-virus software according to AV Comparatives.com…

GOOD LUCK !!!
It’s all to personal preference, and experience.
I prefer Avast (free), although many others recommend Avira (free) as it has a better detection rate, but it lacks a URL blocker that is included in Avast.
Most infections are caused through the use of the Internet, through your Web Browser.
Therefore I recommend using a sandbox, like Sandboxie:
Alongside using an antivirus software, I recommend using a couple of anti-malware products too, these can be on-demand. Such as:
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (free) – manual updates, run every 2 weeks
SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition – manual updates, catches what others miss and removes locked files (FileAssasin)
Spybot Search and Destroy (free) – strong immunization feature for web-browsers as well as spyware removal and file shredder
Any confusion, read below:
Anti-malware is like a new name for both Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus.
Remember, ONLY install ONE Antivirus and Firewall software. You can install more than one Anti-spyware software’s.
Hope this is helpful.
Me personally I use ALWIL’s avast! Home Edition 4.8 It’s free(always) as you wanted, comes with a built-in webroot and spysweeper kit and offers automatic updates. You can get it at the link I provided below.
It get’s even better with each release. Once installed avast! will run a boot scan to detect and remove all viruses, this can take a while, but it will find them and weed them out. avast! scans all of your active files, and scans your web traffic, P2P, and IM traffic as well to help prevent outside attacks.
It can also detect viruses mid download and will abort the connection immediately. If you have Outlook or Thunderbird avast! scans your incoming and outgoing E-mails as well, it’s been very good and diligent in keeping my computer virus free. It does require that you register for a product key, but that’s free and it lasts for 14 months, simply re-register when you need a new one.
There is at least one setting I would recommend changing, and that’s the scanner level from Normal to high. You can do that by right clicking on the avast! system tray icon and selecting "On Access Protection Control" and then moving the slider bar from the right all the way to the left.
Now you may be wondering why it’s free if it’s so good, well it’s simple ALWIL makes enough money off of selling their anti-virus program to businesses that they can offer a home edition to us for free(It’s also their creed, they don’t believe anti-virus should cost the home user). The professional edition does have a few more features, but they aren’t necessary for the average home user. So enjoy.
P.S. I keep forgetting to recommend McAfee as well it’s a very good anti-virus if your willing to pay, my buddy is a tech like I am and it’s kept his computer clean too. McAfee is a great anti-virus for both the technical and non-technical user. However Avast! does just as well, it’s a bit more complicated though.

Try Avast or AVG
I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, I have recently added superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.5 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/home.htm?lid=en-us Is a firewall. You will have to know who to allow and deny. Keep the hackers out. You need something that will protect you against malware, rootkits and all the others. And be protected while surfing on the internet and your email. Needs to block pop ups and publishing sites on web sites. Mr security and firefox protected me yesterday while looking for free virus protection. Do not go through Major Geeks, that can link you to a commercial web site. Do not use av8.5.free-antivirus 2009.com or avg-free antivirus-link.com web pages to down load. They have viruses. The others gave you some different ones. I do not know which are the safe ones except the zonealarm. Some of the free ones are fake. If some one in here tells you which one they use, that will be safe. Your provider usually gives you free ones.
I spent a lot of money on virus protection and lots of other programs keeping my pc safe then found out I didn’t need them…just reinstall when your pc gets messed up. When you get a pc you get all the stuff you need on it, so if you feel you need it then just renew it.
You can always ask Kim Commando or Leo LaPorte the tech guy who are computer gurus…find them on a search engine.

AVG is good
There is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person’s individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.
Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.
Here is a list of free programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, several programs are necessary to maintain a full range of security.
There is a safe site, with software reviews by both the editors and users at http://www.download.com Most of the following programs can be downloaded from there.
ANTI-VIRUS:
-AVG by Grisoft
-Avira
-Avast
Any *one* of these would probably work well for you! Read the reviews to be sure.
ANTI-SPYWARE:
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
There are several excellent free ones:
-Spybot, Search and Destroy
-Ad-Aware
-Spyware Blaster
-Superantispyware
-Malwarebytes
FIREWALL:
-Comodo
-Online Armor
-SandBoxie
-Sunbelt Personal Firewall (formerly Kerio)
-Zone Alarm
GENERAL CLEANING:
-Ccleaner
