I use the canned compressed air when I can take my tower out on the balcony lol you don’t want all that dust in the house!!
During the winter season tho, (here in my winter country Canada) since I can’t take my tower outside I use the "Swifters" towels… because they simply remove dust gently (remember older componants can be fragile to the industrial air blow from the can!) using static, which is magnetic and very present inside a tower!
Get all those dirty pictures out of it
The very best way to clean out your PC would be to use an electostatic resistant vacuum. They cost $$ but are the very best way to clean out your system without frying sensitive components. Canned air is cheap, but in my experience it takes much longer to force all the crap out of the case, between cards, under the heat sink, etc… The vacuum will do a much better job and quicker.
Air in a can will work but it cannot get into the tight spots. Use a compressor but make sure that the air is clean, most compressors spit water so be careful.
Canned air is easy, but not great for the environment, not good to breathe, and sometimes the propellant can get on the components, potentially causing damage. If you are doing it frequently, you might want to consider getting a microblower/vacuum for electronics, like this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1032125&CatId=41 or this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1032123&CatId=41 You will also save over the long run because this lasts longer than the compressed air, and you won’t have to deal with throwing away the empty cans.
For a complete list of different kinds of compressed air yo can buy online, and also some other electric blowers (some of which are really expensive, though), you can see: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=41&
But you can really get compressed air anywhere, or do a web search and find lots of other retailers as well.
Hello,
Canned air is part of the formula but it will not get some of the compressed dust build up in between the blades of you CPU heat sink. This is the metal cube that the fan sits on and cool your processor. I would carefully remove the fan/heat sink together and use a toothpick to dislodge the thick dust build up , then spray up close with the canned air. If you have this kind of grungy buildup, your PC will be happier and cooler if removed. Also, canned air alone tends to push dust bunnies into corners and grooves where you can’t see it or want it. If your PC is pretty clean already then canned air alone is fine.
GOOD LUCK

Using a can of compressed air.

Use compressed air.
Compressed air will blow out the majority of the dust. You can pick up a can of compressed air at just about any electronics store.
The best way to clean the PCs internal components:
1. Unplug the CPU unit (PC tower) from all connections (internet, keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, electrical power, speakers, etc.) If you blow out the computer with it still plugged into the electrical socket or UPS backup, you risk electrical damage to the computer. Sometimes it helps to use Post-Its or tape with markings for connection labeling to remember which cable goes where if you are an inexperienced or novice computer user.
2. Open the cases chasis lid (this varies as each manufacturer has their own chassis designs).
3. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS AT ALL!
4. Use a cannister or "compressed air" to blow out the dust in the computer. Use only short half-second bursts of air. If you use a continuous stream of air, this may damage the computer because compressed air cans can freeze quickly and the sudden burst of cold air will damage the electical components inside the system.
5. Once all of the dust is clear from the computer, close the chassis lid and reconnect all of the cables just as you disconnected them.
