AVG is rated high by most of the computer techs
AVG not so bad McAfee its good but it requires lot of memory so sometime it slows down the pc
i use free version AVIRA good can protect from lot of virus.
but i say if you want to secure your pc than try to use anti virus + anti mail ware+ spy-ware but if you have a purchase or full version of antivirus youe antivirus should have all in one other wise you should install them separately.
how ever keep in mind that it is not guaranteed that all anti virus will protect u 100% from virus there is no such thing.like u lock your door and do u say that you r 100% guaranteed that no one can break in ure house. haha
Hi Tricia the answer is Avg
There are many different review sites and many different opinions… I recently saw in the current PCWorld Magazine a rating of free antiviruses … I have to say I think its pretty accurate … Not sure if they rated AVG… but if it was (the ratings were 1 to 5 … best to worst) than AVG would be #6 (in other-wards, not even on the list)
1) Avast – I have to say on my 8year old laptop it was really sluggish but on my @ 1 and 1/2 year old Toshiba with Windows7, it is a-ok …. Very Good Detection Too
2) Avira – This is what I have on my old laptop and what I had (Trying Avast on my new Toshiba ATM) on my new PC before trying Avast…. I love Avira and even if I am using Avast … I still recommend Avira 100% … Detection only slightly behind Avast … they deducted "points" for the fact they like Avast’s Interface better
3) MS SE – I have to say I don’t trust MS, but I have to given in and say all the reviews are very positive .. I don’t like how it forces you to have windows updates on "download and install automatically" .. or right out of the "box"/"gate"/whatever .. I had to install 60MB of updates ON top of the I think it was 12MB for the Anti-virus itself … but for newbies that really don’t like Avast, or Avira for whatever reason … It’s a decent choice.. with the exception of one test that rated 50% detection and Avira rated 70%, MS SE is on par with Avira Detection wise …. Did MS finally get something right?… They slim down there database and let you change the Windows Update settings when MS SE is install… I’d say 100% yes
4) Panda – Cant remember too much about this ‘review"
5) Comodo’s AV – Not as good as any of the others (not counting … POSSIBLY AVG), but "fair detection"
Those are all Free, but if you feel the need to want to pay for one (for whatever reason), try Eset NOD32 … its the only non-free antivirus I recommend and it didn’t even lag my older systems … computer specs may vary, so I am not going to say it will not lag yours, but it probably will not

Both are not very good

AVAST is one that I prefer for two reasons. It has rootkit protection in the free version – the others don’t. Also, the free version has a boot scan which scans the hard drive and removes the bugs before the OS boots up. Its not a fast scan, but its one of the best ways to get rid of an infection.

ive personally used avg for several years and love it..its free from download.com and the updates are free…i work for a med center and our IT dept uses avg on everything. avg2011 is haveing some issues right now but otherwise its great.. microsoft securities essentials is very good as well..and its also free from the same site.
AVG Free is ok and better than most.
If you want my opinion, then neither. My reasons for this is because:
1) AVG does not have any Rootkit protection. In order to get it, you need to do either that Free Trial, which is only thirty days long, or actually buy the program. It is also not very friendly with most Anti Spyware programs and because of that, it is prone to shut them down.
2) McAfee Security has had a bad history of being an Anti Virus that hogs up your memory. It is also known to miss a lot of infections. I had it on my computer once, and it barely caught a single thing when my computer was infected.
My suggestion, get Avast. Even in the Free version, it works like a charm. It does not take up much space and it has Anti Rootkit which is good. It also allows you to keep your usual Anti Spyware running and does not shut it down. It also has a nifty Boot Scan option and what it does is that it runs before Windows is even loaded. While doing so, it does a thorough scan of your computer and will hunt down any malicious content in your computer before it has the chance to activate and cleans it automatically before any damage is done. Granted, since the scan is very thorough, it tends to be slower than molasses on a cold winter morning, but in the end…it is worth having and is guaranteed to clean out any malware.
