Whenever I try to run a scan using Earthlink Protection Control Center, it will start to scan but stops right away. I assume this is because a virus is stopping it from scanning. Can I fix this, or is my computer gone for good?

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:

This sounds like fraud. In my opioin you’ve been stiched up. As an IT professonal I would recommend AVG 7.5 to remove it. AVG anti spyware works terribly. Sadly AVG is not the best protection so don’t keep AVG after removing basic viruses then get Norton AVG will get rid of a few but not them all AVG cliams to have detected something but they lie.
You get what you pay for. All the free protection you get from the providers, such as Earth link, People PC, Yahoo, and the list goes on, is like putting a band aid on a cut that requires stitches. It is minimal protection. I’m not a salesman, but I am currently using AVG 7.5, and am very pleased. Of course this program is not free, but think of the price of your computer. To pay a little bit, to get a lot of protection, is well worth it. You can check with Earthlink first, and explain your problem. When you finally get tired of talking to them, invest in a good security program, one that will catch everything in RAM, and not let it get to the hard drive first.
You should still be able to run a virus scan. Would recommend installing a reliable security package like Norton Internet Security 2007 or McAfee. if you still want to use Earthlink’s then go to their customer support and E-mail or phone them for help at http://support.earthlink.net/
You may need to update or reinstall from earthlink to correct.
You get what you pay for,if it is free do not expect much support or help.
Hope this helps
If you are using Windows XP or greater heres what you can do: go to start (start menu) all programs-accessories-system tools-system restore. it will ask you if you want to restore your computer to an earlier time. click "yes" then restore your computer to a time in which you know your anti-virus program was working correctly. after it has been restored, turn system restore OFF and then restart your computer. After you have restarted your computer turn system restore back on!
u can try scanning in safe mode – to go to safe mode – hit the F8 key repeatedly when u boot up the pc – u will see a dos mode menu – choose Safe Mode – and do the virus scan again …
Do an online scan. Here are some sites you can use. Allow the programs to remove all they find. Accept any ActiveX they need you to download.
