Until such a time as someone writes and releases some MacOs X viruses, you don’t need much more than what comes with your Mac. There are no currently released MacOs X viruses. There are 6 trojans which you have to download and install with your admin password to activate them. There’s a fake Mac anti-virus, a fake Mac malware remover, a fake Mac codec to view porn, and a fake Mac poker game. There’s also trojans in the illegal torrent downloads of iWorks 09 and Photoshop CS4. That’s it so far. You can’t catch anything on a Mac by visiting a website or opening email. So if you aren’t tricked into downloading illegal or fake software, you are fine.
As to routine maintenance, there’s a disk utility program in your utilities folder. Once a month have it repair your permissions and verify your hard disk. You probably also got a Micromat CD free with your Mac, it contains TechTool which has additional software you can use if any problems show up. Whenever you update your software, your Mac automatically "prioritizes" your hard drive & cleans up the files.
Enjoy your Mac.
