HWiNFO is a tool I have used for many years. It’s great and it’s free! It tells you all about your machine, the components in it, temperature, fan speed etc.
I prefer tune-up utilities. its easy to use, and contains many usefool tools inside the program.
Memtest:

CPU-Z(info about CPU, GPU, and MoBo):
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html (Downloads are on the right)
RivaTuner(Temps and other info about the video card):

Other than that, just do some research.. Here on yahoo answers, you can learn a lot from the people roaming around. Making your own computer can help you understand them and compatibility. Experience will help you learn.. If you get viruses, you will understand how to get rid of them. If you study hardware and use it, you will understand it.
If you need help, feel free to email me: nclark6@gmail.com
I check it every day, about 15 times a day.
