The best free software in my opinion is Avast. When you need something stronger you should look into a paid option, most good software can be had for $40 or less, you don’t need the biggest names.
AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product , rapid virus database updates are available for the lifetime of the product, thereby providing the high level of detection capability that millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers. AVG Free is easy to use and will not slow your system down (low system resource requirements
I only use and recommend Avira.
I suggest you search in http://www.google.com "top ten antivirus program" then click the first result then choose from the top ten antivirus program.
I suggest getting rid of windows and installing Linux mint which is very easy to use.
Then install 7 in a virtual machine if you really need it.
All I can tell you is, don’t download any virus protection program unless it is certified by the cnet people at their website. They usually test it out so its not a scam.
So far i know that norton, trendmicro, mcafee, avg and kaspersky are legit and real and pretty good
i had to buy norton and it doesn’t even work all the time, so i downloaded avast for free and it’s been great.
Avira for antivirus and then Malwarebytes to plug any remaining holes.
Both FREE
Suggestion….. don’t forget to check System Requirements for the product to see if it runs on Windows 7…. apparently you may have the "beta" version ? Test Verison ? Uh-oh

Stay clear of GData. But any of the other ones are OK. If I were you, I would go for EsetNod32, TrendMicro, or F-Secure, that is if you are going to get a paid anti-virus program. I use Avast free, and it hasn’t let me down yet, but I am also safe on the internet.
I’m using AVG free in my lesser Computers and AVG pro in my Main Computer for 5 years now never had a virus or a problem in all those Years.
Stay away from the Symantec bloat (NORTON) and MC’s and Trend Micro they seem to be worse than the viruses can’t get rid of them once installed.
